Squirrel Monkey Pictures

I particularly like squirrel monkeys because they all look like baby monkeys…and who doesn’t love baby animal pictures? This photo blog on he common squirrel monkey shows the curious nature of them as well as their adorable looks.

Squirrel monkeys are listed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern although their populations are increasingly affected by the pet trade, medical research, and deforestation issues. They are a species that normally lives in the rain forests of South America and in some Caribbean islands as well.

Baboon Pictures

This photo blog on baboon pictures was quite a delight to see. You can easily get a sense of the hierarchy and social dynamics in the groups of the setting. There appears to be the alpha male, beta male, a wise old baboon, followers, babies, and caring mother baboons. There really is something special in each one of these photos. One of the images appears to be a runaway scene as the family of baboons seem to be worried about something while running off.

List of Colorful Bird Pictures

On the top we have a Blue Indian Peafowl – a female peacock, but is technically called a peahen since she is a female.

On the first row of thumbnails I have an obviously colorful yellow bird that I don’t know the name to, a white pelican next to it, and a reeve’s pheasant next to the pelican.

In the second row of thumbnails I have a red parrot, a pink galah cockatoo, and a colorful Lady Amherst’s Pheasant.

On the third row of thumbnails I have a blue hyacinth macaw, a light blue parakeet, and a headshot of a black crowned crane.

Finally, the last row is of a pink flamingo shot with black and white background. You may have noticed that this album has all black and white backgrounds…I don’t know, I just like the way colors pop out with a b&w background.

Ring Tailed Lemur Facts

Ring tailed lemurs are listed by the IUCN as Near Threatened species. Their populations are decreasing in their native homelands of Madagascar.

Hunting remains a major problem that continues to threaten the ring tailed lemur as well as habitat loss. Burning practices in Madagascar take place every year to clear forests and bushes for agriculture and livestock production. Due to poor economic conditions in Madagascar, these species are also hunted as bush-meat by the local population or are kept as pets.

The ring tailed lemur is probably most famous by King Julian, king of the lemurs, in Dreamworks Animation Film Madagascar. Awareness of threatened species like lemurs through children’s films is a great way to promote conservation.

Black and White Ruffed Lemur Facts

The black and white ruffed lemur is native to the island nation of Madagascar. It is listed by the IUCN as Critically Endangered. The population of these lemurs are decreasing since they moved from ‘endangered’ status to ‘critically endangered’ status in 2008. It turns out, their are at least 103 different species of lemurs, of which, more are being discovered every year. The lemur populations in Madagascar are increasingly endangered because of habitat loss and the local population eating lemurs (known as bushmeat) due to poor economic conditions.

Lemurs are an important part of the natural environment in Madagascar. They feed on the various seasonal fruits in the rain forests which helps to spread undigested fruit seeds via their manure. Madagascar is plagued by resource depletion by over-logging and agriculture that is taking over the natural environment. The country is struggling to maintain what’s left of their biodiversity through national parks and eco-tourism.

Lemur Facts:

Ruffed Lemurs use all of their arms and legs for walking/running and their tails help them keep balance while up in the trees.

Lemurs have a very keen sense of smell. They use smell to communicate with other animals and they have special glands that leave behind scent trails for marking their territories.

Mama lemurs are able to carry baby lemurs in their mouths until the baby lemur can hold on to their mothers fur.

Lemurs are very social creatures (primates) and they like to hang out in groups of up to sixteen, but are typically in smaller groups of between 2 and 5 lemurs.

Lemurs have fingers and toes that make it easy to grip branches for climbing and groom their fellow lemurs.

The White Stork

The white stork bird is a species of bird who’s population is documented as increasing according to the IUCN. They are classified as Least Concern (LC) by the IUCN but were at one time considered a threatened species in the 1980′s. This was because the habitat for white storks were being destroyed through industrialization processes like wetland draining and industrial farming that turned wide open meadows into mono-crops such as corn.

Wikipedia notes that the last wild White Crane in Belgium was seen in 1895, in Switzerland in 1950, in Sweden in 1955, and in the Netherlands in 1991. However, the European white crane has been reintroduced into the wild after conservation programs have helped the species begin to recover.

Younger white storks have black bills which turn orange or red as they grow into adults.

White storks are known for liking open grassy or wetlands areas. Sometimes called the European white stork, when in groups, the colony size and social dynamic can be very different. When it comes to making nests, white storks like to build them BIG. They usually build a large nest out of sticks and twigs on buildings, trees, or man made platforms. The nests can vary in size anywhere from one to two meters. Luckily, these birds know what sustainability is all about because they do re-use nests every year.

I am particularly glad I was able to capture these white stork pictures while they were in their nicely made nest on a nice hot summer day. The white stork images on this page are available for use on your blog or website, but only if you link back to Animals Earth.

All About The Scarlet Ibis Bird

The scarlet ibis is one of my favorite birds because of their bright red coloring. For an ibis, they make quite an attractive sight if you’ve ever come across them in an aviary, zoo, or reserve. I snapped these scarlet ibis pictures while in a wildlife safari and I must say they are my favorite photos that I’ve taken in the bird classification.

A little background info from the IUCN tells us that the scarlet ibis in the wild have a large range with their colonies that can be seen all over the South American continent as well as in the Caribbean.

Argentina, Brazil, and Colombia

Aruba, Belize, and Cuba

French Guiana, Guyana, and Suriname

Dominica, Ecuador, and Grenada

Trinidad and Tobago

Jamaica and Panama

Venezuela and Bolivia

and parts of the United States

Scarlet ibis bird populations are being documented as decreasing, however, the IUCN classifies these birds as LC, or of Least Concern.

While it’s good to know that these beautiful birds are not endangered, I’m glad that organizations such as the IUCN are keeping an eye on the population numbers.

Hopefully you enjoy my scarlet ibis images and feel free to use them on your blog or website as long as you link back to animalsearth.org. Thanks.
