Ring tailed lemurs are listed by the IUCN as Near Threatened species. Their populations are decreasing in their native homelands of Madagascar.
Hunting remains a major problem that continues to threaten the ring tailed lemur as well as habitat loss. Burning practices in Madagascar take place every year to clear forests and bushes for agriculture and livestock production. Due to poor economic conditions in Madagascar, these species are also hunted as bush-meat by the local population or are kept as pets.
The ring tailed lemur is probably most famous by King Julian, king of the lemurs, in Dreamworks Animation Film Madagascar. Awareness of threatened species like lemurs through children’s films is a great way to promote conservation.
